Together Time
Ah, Christmas! “The most wonderful time of the year.”
For most, it’s the busiest time of the year. And for some, the most stressful time of the year. This season evokes memories of time past. Some look back nostalgically and wish for things to be the same. For others their memories are filled with regret or pain. How we use our time impacts the memories we carry with us into the future.
The month of December has become synonymous with the word “busy.” Christmas cards need to be written, gifts need to be purchased and wrapped, and parties, concerts, and plans fill the calendar. These things often bring new memories and much joy, but have you considered their cost?
Everything costs something—time. Time is a rare and precious commodity, and its value is often unrealized until it’s gone. As our children grow, we become acutely aware of the passing of time, as each passing year seems to fly by more quickly than the last. Some people recklessly waste their time, unaware of the treasure they hold. Others view time as their enemy and wish for more. But, have you considered time as a gift?
“There’s only one thing more precious than our time and that’s who we spend it on.” This quote by Leo Christopher helps me refocus and remember that “Together Time” is the best time. When we spend time with loved ones, we can build memories that last forever. Time spent engaging, listening, and being in the moment with another person is a wonderful gift!
Time is the gift this Christmas you must afford to give, no matter the cost. What do your children see and feel by the way you use your time? Does your spouse feel loved by the way you fill your calendar? Is everything you are doing reflecting your true priorities? These are challenging questions, but if neglected we can find ourselves filled with regret and pain.
After reflecting on your busyness and how you spend your time, remember that today is a new day and there is hope. I’m thankful that Christmas is all about hope! Christ was born to offer hope and forgiveness to a broken and hurting world. “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it,” Psalm 118:24. May we all rejoice in the time we’ve been given and give the gift of “Together Time” this Christmas.
